Radial Design
I can create a unique symmetrical radial design.
The students looked at two examples of radial designs, Mandalas and Rose Windows. A Mandala is a complex abstract design that is usually circular in form. The word "mandala" is a Sanskrit word that means "circle". Mandalas often contain both geometric and organic forms. Rose Window, also called Wheel Window, a decorative circular window, filled with stained glass. The design has a center point and everything radiates out from the center, like a rose.

- Students had to problem solve what tools were needed to create a perfect Circle on an 18x18 piece of paper without a Compass.
- Next they had to explore how to create a Symmetrical Radial Design out of Geometric and Organic shapes (no pictures).
- Solve how to transfer the design to the other side of the circle.
Vocabulary:
- Compass: an instrument used to draw circles.
- Radial: A type of design based on a circle with its design extending outward.
- Circle: Is a curved line that is the same distance from the center all the way around and connects at the point where it began.
- Geometric Shapes: Made out of points and lines including the triangle, square, and circle.
- Organic Shapes: Are irregular or asymmetrical, they are associated with things from the natural world, like plants and animals.
- Pattern: The repeating of an object or symbol all over the work of art.
- Symmetrical: Drawing a line down the center of something and get two similar halves.
